Former Standard Oil Site

Former Standard Oil Site

River Ave. and Federal St. (Block 1181, Lot 1)
The site is located near Camden’s Marlton neighborhood and totals approximately 0.78 acres in size. The site is vacant and is bounded to the north by railroad tracks, to the east by River Avenue, to the south by Federal Street, and to the west by the Cooper River. Historic research indicates that in the late 1800s, the southern portion of the lot was developed as a coal shed and part of a larger coal yard. Beginning in 1906, the northern portion of the lot belonged to the Standard Oil Company and included a large oil tank, two small oil tanks, a lubricating oil cellar, and several oil storage sheds. By 1926, Standard Oil Company had built a loading shed on the northern portion of the lot, and the southern portion contained a pumping house and eight gasoline and oil tanks with a concrete base. By 1950, a warehouse and loading shed were situated on the northern portion and an oil tank had been constructed at the center of the Site. The southern portion of the site contained four gasoline and oil tanks with a concrete base.
In 2015 a Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment was completed and recognized several environmental conditions. In addition, there are two oil spill reports on record in the Cooper River in the vicinity of – and possibly related to – the site. Currently, the CRA has contracted with a Licensed Site Remediation Professional to conduct a Preliminary Assessment (PA) and Site Investigation (SI).
